HALLOWEEN TALES OF FAIRIES, GHOULS, AND SPIRITS
AT CAHERNANE HOUSE HOTEL
WITH IRELAND’S BEST KNOWN AND LOVED SEANACHAÍ
Eddie Lenihan, one of Ireland’s most famous seanachaí’s and the country’s foremost expert on Irish fairies will once again visit Cahernane House Hotel in Killarney where he will share some of his mythical and ghoulish stories for Halloween. Eddie was a great hit with guests last Halloween and has been invited back to Cahernane this year to tell both residents and non-residents alike ancient stories about the myths and legends of Irish folklore.
Irish fairy stories form a prominent part of Eddie’s huge repertoire, and he has collected these stories from old people all around Ireland who have had encounters with fairies or mythical creatures. He has also gathered historical tales and stories of notable figures such as the banshee, bad fairies, demon stories, accounts of saints, of monsters, ogres, giants, and ghosts. Some of the stories are not for the faint hearted and were curated from his years of research and by walking the tracks and trails of forgotten Ireland where solitary hawthorn bushes mark the sacred meeting places of the fairies.
An interesting character, and an enthralling storyteller, Eddie has captured the imagination of audiences from Dublin to Dubai. The story telling evening is open for both residents and locals. At 6.00 pm on Halloween evening there will be a guided tour of the house and Eddie Lenihan’s stories will be begin later that night at 9.30pm, after dinner. Non-residents and people in the local area are also welcome to come and listen to Eddie’s scary stories on Halloween night complimentary… if they dare!
The residential package to stay over is called ‘Halloween Story Telling at Cahernane’. It includes a two-night minimum stay and runs from Tuesday, 31st of October with guests checking out on Thursday, 2nd of November. It offers excellent value and is priced from €286 per person B&B sharing in a Deluxe Room and includes dinner on one evening. Children aged 3 -12 cost €26 per night each when sharing with their parents while children under 3 are complimentary. It also includes dinner for the family on one evening, a kid’s movie with treats and popcorn and storytelling with Eddie Lenihan in the Drawing Room.
The following morning, All Souls Day, guests will meet at Killegy Graveyard to see where the original residents and builders of both Cahernane House and nearby Muckross House are buried and will hear some more interesting historical stories about the local area.
Located just outside the centre of the thriving town of Killarney, the 48-bedroom Cahernane House Hotel is still far enough away from the hustle and bustle of Kerry’s major urban centre to offer a secluded and tranquil getaway. It is located on 6.4 acres of verdant grounds and is adjacent to the Killarney Lakes and Killarney National Park.
There are great places to explore in the area including Muckross House and Ross Castle on the shore of Lough Leane. The castle was built by O’Donoghue Mór in the 15th century and is believed to be one of Ireland’s most haunted castles. It is said that every seven years O’Donoghue himself rises from the lake and circles the shore on a splendid white horse. The legend goes that those lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the spectre will have good fortune for the rest of their lives!
Cahernane House Hotel was originally built in 1877 as a family residence for Henry Herbert at a cost of £5,992. The original plans were to build a mansion three times the size of what it is presently, but the next generation of the Herbert family fell on hard times and let the property out as a hotel. As a result, the property feels and looks more like a grand, country, private residence rather than a hotel.
Reminiscent of times gone by, the house never lost its Victorian charm despite the change
over of owner’s numerous times throughout its history. It too has great history and many people have reported seeing the ghost of Gwendolyn Herbert, the daughter of the original owner of the house as she makes her way eerily up the grand hand carved oak staircase.
To book The Halloween package at Cahernane House Hotel or for more information please see www.cahernane.com or call +353 64 663 1895.

ECO-LABEL & GREEN ACCREDITATION AWARDS FOR THE LIMERICK STRAND HOTEL
|Pictured from left to right- Kate Wieczorkiewicz, Dermot Fehily, Hugh Crowley, Imelda Lineen & Darragh Murphy|
The Limerick Strand Hotel is thrilled to announce that they have been awarded the prestigious Eco-Label Award by Green Hospitality Ireland and a Silver Green Tourism Accreditation Award by Green Tourism Ireland.
These recognitions are a testament to the hotels unwavering commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. The Green Hospitality Programme is the Irish Hospitality, Travel & Tourism Resource for Sustainable and Responsible Tourism. It was created to provide best practice environmental management advice and support to the sector. Green Tourism Ireland works to promote a greener, cleaner environment, for people, places, and our planet. They recognise and support eco-friendly achievements of tourism businesses with their internationally respected accreditation programme of Bronze, Silver, and Gold awards.
“We are delighted to be acknowledged for our efforts in reducing our ecological footprint and promoting eco-friendly practices within our establishment. Receiving the Eco-Label Award and a Silver Green Tourism Accreditation is not just an achievement, it is a pledge to our guests, our community, and the planet. It reaffirms our dedication to making conscientious choices that are committed to continually improving our environmental performance” said Interim General Manager, Imelda Lineen.
The Green Hospitality Awards are an internationally recognised third-party environmental & sustainability certification awards programme which has been running since 2004. It requires businesses to follow a set of defined criteria and implement an Environmental Management System which then builds towards a full sustainability programme. The criteria are aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, Global Sustainable Tourism Council Criteria, EU Ecolabel and the Sustainability Hospitality Alliance Hotel Carbon, Water and Waste Measurement methodologies.
Green Tourism Ireland’s Bronze/Silver/Gold Accreditation Awards are acknowledged worldwide as an indicator of good environmentally friendly practice and are a great way of progressing on a green journey as well as acting as a hallmark of ‘green quality’, attracting custom from increasing numbers of eco-minded visitors.
The Limerick Strand Hotel understands the importance of preserving the environment for future generations. They are dedicated to reducing energy consumption, minimizing waste, and conserving resources wherever possible. The hotel makes small but meaningful efforts to increase biodiversity within the hotel, and on hotel grounds. Recently they installed a bird nest and insect boxes, providing shelter and nesting facilities to many types of insects in all seasons. It may provide a temporary or permanent home for solitary bees or wasps or be a safe space for insects to hatch. All the bugs are essential to healthy ecosystems, pollination and soil quality and attract birds, for whom they have placed a new nesting box that will hopefully become home to chicks soon.
To re-enforce their commitment to the environment, they have recently appointed Kate Wieczorkiewicz as Back of House and Sustainability Manager. With over 10 years’ experience in the hospitality and retail sectors, Kate recently completed her studies in Environment, Sustainability and Climate at University College Cork and is keen to drive Limerick Strand Hotel’s sustainability programme forward.
Moreover, The Limerick Stand is determined to raise awareness amongst staff and guests about the importance of environmental conservation and will continue to educate and engage with their team and patrons, encouraging them to join in their mission to protect our precious planet.
The Limerick Strand Hotel is proud to be part of the solution. They are committed to upholding the Eco-Label Award standards and will keep striving to set an example in the hospitality industry.
“Together, we can make a positive impact on the environment, and we invite everyone to join us on this important journey towards a greener and more sustainable future”, added Imelda Lineen.

AUTHOR OF BOOK ON IRISH PATRIOT DIARMUID LYNCH IS HONOURED
Tracton local Eileen McGough wins Community Spirit Award
Retired teacher and writer Eileen McGough is the latest winner of the Cork International Hotel Community Spirit Award. The Tracton local was honoured for her dedication and commitment to the community which includes her editorial work on the Tracton Newsletter for almost four decades as well as the restoration of the former Knocknamanagh school house into the Tracton Arts & Community Centre.
Eileen McGough has also been praised for bringing the story of Diarmuid Lynch to life. The Corkman, who was a native of Tracton, was one of the key people in the 1916 Rising. But despite his important role in Ireland’s history very little was known about his life until Eileen wrote the biography, Diarmuid Lynch: A Forgotten Irish Patriot.
Eileen published a second book entitled, Tracton, Where the Abbey Lies Low, which tells the history of the community located near the village of Minane Bridge. The proceeds of the sales of the book were donated to the restoration of the old school house into the local community centre which offers a broad range of facilities including a conference room and a theatre.
Eileen was actively involved in putting together the Tracton Newsletter from 1978 until she recently stepped down from her editorial career with the publication. The Newsletter informs the community on all the events and activities of local clubs, associations, committees, the school and the church and Eileen said it “served to bind the community, especially in times of crisis.”
The Killarney native moved to Tracton in 1971 where she was a local primary school teacher until 2000. The community members who nominated her for the award described her as one of life’s doers who never seeks the limelight but achieves so much in a quiet and determined manner.
General Manager of the Cork International Hotel, Eoghan Murphy said; “Eileen is exactly the kind of candidate we look for when choosing a monthly winner for the Community Spirit Awards. She is giving of her time and energy to improve services for the local community and that’s what the awards are all about. She has been a stalwart of many of the area’s successful projects, including the impressive arts & community centre, and I am delighted to honour her with the latest Community Spirit Award. ”
The Cork International Hotel Community Spirit Awards are sponsored by The Carrigdhoun Newspaper and Gerald McCarthy Giftware.
The judging panel for the Community Spirit Awards are made up of a mixture of representatives from the public and private sector within the community.
The judging panel for this award was:
Carmel Lonergan, Group Director of Operations, Trigon Hotels
Nicola Radley, Senior Executive Officer, Municipal District Operations & Rural Development at Cork County Council
Vincent O'Donovan, Publisher of The Carrigdhoun Newspaper
Nominations are now open for next month's awards at: https://www.
COUPLES GOING POTTY FOR WEDDINGS 💒💒💒
Metropole Hotel to host a wedding fair as team members prepare for busy season ahead
The Metropole Hotel is seeing an increase in smaller, more intimate weddings with many couples now opting for themed events for their special days. A Harry Potter themed wedding was one of the most recent events that the hotel’s team members helped put together while crisp or donut walls are the latest trend that couples request.

Recently we hosted a Harry Potter themed wedding with long banqueting tables decked out in four different Harry Potter styles such as Gryffindor and Ravenclaw. We’ve also had an increase in requests for donut walls and crisp walls where guests can treat themselves to donuts or crisps that are displayed on a special wall in the reception area. I always encourage couples to tell us if they have any quirky ideas and we will work with them to make it a reality.”
