A Classic from 2013 still going strong!


Blacks of Kinsale certainly crafted a classic when they produced their Kinsale Pale Ale in 2013. It is one of my favourite ales. I love the way the flavours spread over the palate from the first sip and that dry clean lingering finish. Indeed, linger is the word. Take your time sipping, the better to enjoy every single drop.


Blacks had this spot on from the beginning. It is consistently excellent, as good as ever and is our current Beer of the Week. 


The Blacks classic has an inviting gold colour with the whitest head of foamy bubbles. Citrusy aromas introduce themselves.  And hoppy flavours galore as the golden liquid pleasures the palate and then the bonus of the crisp and refreshing finish.


it is that balance between malt and hops that I find attractive. Some brewers go too heavy on the malt for their pale ales but this recipe allows the hops, a mix of Centennial, Cascade, and Citra, to shine through, contributing flavours of grapefruit, lime and other citrus, while the malt also plays its part, not least in giving a delicious mouthfeel.



This is the brewery’s own take on it: An American style Pale Ale bursting with hoppy tropical and juicy citrus fruit flavours, masterfully fused with biscuit and caramel malt aromas to produce a fantastic taste sensation. Medium in body with perfect carbonation, this beer will zip around your mouth reaching a beautiful clean finish. Pair with: Burgers, Steaks, BBQ Meats

Black Beak “Juniper Tempest” Irish Gin is the latest version of this gin from the self-titled Flavour Mavericks of Blacks Distillery in Kinsale. And what a mouthful of complex and flavoursome spirit! 


A superb contribution from the Juniper, of course, in a sextet of botanicals that also features Pink Grapefruit peel (fresh, not dried), Orange peel, Cardamon pods, Angelica root and Heather flower.


Juniper is quite forward here with its fresh and robust coniferous aroma (think Christmas tree, the real one!). More freshness is added to the mix by the Grapefruit peel, more citrus from the Orange (no lemon peel in this gin), spice from the Cardamon, light herbal and floral notes thanks to the Heather flowers and a warming earthy contribution from the Angelica root. Well done to the Mavericks for getting a delicious supple balance in this bottle.


 

Just like hops in good beer, juniper is an essential element in gin. Like hops, it can be overdone. Blacks have been quite bold here yet, but thanks to their shrewd use of the other botanicals, this Juniper Tempest has a beautiful balance.


Quite a bright and refreshing gin from the Flavour Mavericks and one of the best  I’ve tasted over recent years. This rebrand has been in the works for the past few months.  I’d be happy to see the improved Tempest hang around for a long while.


The overall deep flavour of the gin plus the tartness of the Pink Grapefruit would make Tempest an influential element in classic cocktails such as Negroni and Martini and equally in the traditional Gin and Tonic. It also has potential as a sipping gin but if drinking it neat is a step too far, why not try it on the rocks or perhaps use less tonic than the usual three to one. Up to you!


By the way, Juniper berries are used in a wide variety of culinary dishes and are forever linked with gin, being always the primary flavouring. But did you know that Juniper gave the spirit its name? Gin it seems is an adaptation of jenever (the Dutch name for juniper), and or the old English word genever

Blacks will launch the Juniper Tempest at AYE (9 Anglesea Street. Cork) on Friday 28th July (5.00 pm - 7.00 pm.

Craft Delight With 13 Brewers At Franciscan Well Easter Fest

Busy days for Sean at the Black's of Kinsale taps.


A baker’s dozen of Ireland’s craft breweries set up camp at the Franciscan Well and turned their well and truly revived Easter Beer Fest into a convivial carnival featuring the best of craft over the holiday weekend. Hard to resist some of the stars here, some beautiful pours over the two days, including a debut for the delicious Locavore Spring 2023, a Honey Hefeweizen, by Wicklow Wolf.



I did have a Plan A when I arrived in the busy venue on Saturday afternoon but that didn't last long. Nor did Plan B or indeed any notion of a plan. No seat available but I did get my aging back up against a solid object and relaxed.

Spot the difference? One of these is a lager, one's a stout. Answer at end.


Lots of chats too of course, none of it too serious. We were here for the craft and the craic. Actually, black (rhymes with craic!) was on Plan A and I did get a couple in. Had a good chat with Sean from Black’s of Kinsale. I was familiar with all three of his taps, including the marvellous Red Rye Redemption. 


My eyes wandered to his right and I spotted a dark lager at Lineman. Enjoyed their Schwarzbier last year so I tried the Undertone - a Czech Dark Lager (4.5%), dark with hints of red in the depths, smooth caramel, a touch of toast but all smooth and clean just like a lager should be! The Undertone, a little less roasty than a Schwarzbier, is making a return to the Lineman portfolio and is sure to get a terrific welcome.


That goes on to my shopping list for Bradley’s. In fact, all the beers mentioned here will be going on to that list. Some good weeks ahead then!


My first real black came from Phil, at the Kinnegar stand.  He poured me a glass of their long-standing favourite Yannaroddy (4.8%). Long-standing maybe but you never get tired of class and this rich and creamy porter, made with love, has Donegal expertise in every sip.

My second black came later on, the Chocolate Truffle Stout from Porterhouse. This limited edition (4.2%) surprised me - I’m always a little suspicious of nitro - but very few can say no to chocolate. Very smooth of course and delicious but not too sweet at all.



More potential sweetness next, but very well balanced. Wicklow Wolf tell us their Locavore Spring 2023 is “a Honey Hefeweizen brewed with heather honey supplied by our friends at @openhivehoney. The bees worked hard in the Wicklow mountains to gather the nectar to make beautiful heather honey for this brew.” Their 2022 edition, a barrel aged ale, was one of my beers of the year and, being a big honey fan anyhow, I’ll be looking at this one more closely soon! ABV is 6.0%.


Original 7 Red
Had been hoping to try the Cutback New England IPA by Lough Gill but it wasn’t available at the time I called. So I switched to next door to the “home” brewery, the Original 7, who have been expanding their range and availability in local pubs since their relatively recent founding and their Steve Guiney says they will have a beautiful surprise for fans late in the summer.


While looking forward to that, I absolutely enjoyed their Wonderland Red Ale. Quite a mix here, according to their notes - caramel, blackcurrant, raspberry and cherry - but a well judged balance and a lovely red and a truly session-able beer with an IBU of 22 and 4.2% ABV.



So we moved from Keith (at the Wolf stand) to Simon at Galway Bay. Started with their classic Helles, the Slow Lives (5%). Next from the west was the Sister Cities (6.2%), a Sour IPA with citrus, apple, a touch of elderflower and a balancing acidity. Very drinkable indeed and looking forward to a few in a the garden in the better days ahead! Thanks Simon! And thanks to all the people we met and sorry we missed out on a few. Next time!

Powerscourt Distillery win double Gold at the 2022 Irish Whiskey Awards



The team at Powerscourt Distillery are delighted to announce the addition of two new award medals to its collection, which is steadily growing.  At the recent Irish Whiskey Awards 2022, Fercullen Whiskeys received two Gold Awards. Their latest release – 21-year-old Single Malt, along with their Limited Edition Italian Gardens, both took home Gold at the Awards and mark a significant achievement for the Enniskerry Distillery, who are going from strength to strength. The Irish Whiskey Awards started in 2013, and the event has gone on to be one of the biggest celebrations of Irish whiskey in the world.

It is a time for welcoming the harvest and ushering in the dark half of the year. Samhain holds a special place in our memories as our Underworld series was born from this darkness.

The Underworld series of native Irish beers was born out of our quest for adventure, our sense of history and our respect for tradition. If you haven't tried the three Underworld beers yet, you are missing out on Ireland's only beers fermented with a native Irish yeast.

On October 31st, 2017, we embarked upon the Wild Yeast Chase and harvested a yeast we named Morrigan from Oweynagat cave. The cave is considered to be the “Gate to Hell” or entrance to the Underworld and the origin of Samhain. You have been warned!

Sergeant Jimmy 2022 is on its way, scheduled for a late November release. 
And something sour, barrel conditioned and special this way comes in the next month or less, stay tuned!
