Lots of excellent Heat at Home, Click & Collect, and Takeaway Meals around the city and county at the moment. But there are some that fail to excite when you read the menu. “Same old, same old”. You think and move on to another virtual menu.

The menu at On the Pig’s Back, changes weekly and is well worth taking a look at. Prawns, Chicken Salad, Hake and Pork Chop, may not at first seem all that exciting but go a little deeper, as Head Chef Paul did, and you’ll see those prawns come with the most gorgeous Creamed Corn, not an everyday menu item around here! The Hake is enhanced by a beautiful Corn Succotash, another item I rarely, if ever, see on local menus.

We had the privilege of trying the full menu last Saturday night and both quality and quantity were massive. You do have to do your own bit in the kitchen of course but the instructions are clear and precise and easy to follow.

BBQ Prawns with Creamed Corn and Kale. Takes about six minutes to prepare at home.
 Amazing flavour here, all blended in so well, and that corn was outstanding.



Spiced Chicken Salad with Crisp Leaves, Cherry tomato, Red Onion, Ranch Dressing and Croutons 
Another 6 minutes required here! Nice and spicy and that dressing really enhanced it, would have been a different dish without it.


Herb Crusted Pan-fried Hake, Corn Succotash, Baked Sweet Potato Wedges and Caper Brown Butter.
This takes about twice as long as the starters. Delicious crust on the hake and that Succotash was really superb, contributing much to the dish.

Broiled Marinated Pork Chop, Buttered Savoy Cabbage, Fondant Potatoes with Mild Mustard Sauce.
Again, about twice as long as the starters but you do have to start the potatoes earlier! Another winner and that includes the potatoes! The chop was itself was top class, juicy, succulent.



Mississippi Mud Pie, garnished with crushed meringue and served cold.






Baked Raspberry Cheesecake, served cold. Extra berries not included! So much fruit flavour came through here. Really indulgent!

Not surprised at all at the quality as we’ve been buying quite a few bits and pieces from On the Pig’s Back via Neighbourfood over the past 12 months or so and whether it’s their quiches, soups, tagines, Harissa chicken fillet, Beef Bourguignon, or Fish Pie Gratin, we’ve never been disappointed. And so when I got the invite to try out the Saturday Night Takeway, the rapid response was “yes, please”.

Other than the famous aged Viura by Hacienda López, I know very little about Rioja white. So this blend, led by Viura, turned out to be a very pleasant surprise indeed.

 

It has a very light straw colour, hints of grey/pink, bright. Aromatic with fruits like melon, and gooseberry showing. Fresh and fruity on the palate, an outstanding first impression. Succulent but with good acidity. The finish is medium to long. That initial impression carries through to the finalé, a superb wine and Very Highly Recommended.


Izadi picks the six native white varieties of Rioja based on the oldest vineyards of the region to elaborate “a very special Blanco”. The blend is 65% Viura, 10% Malvasía, 10% Garnacha Blanca, 5% Tempranillo Blanco, 5% Maturana Blanca y 5% Turruntés, all from the area around Villabuena and the medieval village off Samanmigeo on the road between Haro and Logrono. 


Importers Liberty tell us Izadi is owned and run by Lalo Antón and his family. Izadi, which means ‘nature’ in the Basque language, is a project rooted in a passion for gastronomy and wine. The estate was founded in 1987 by Gonzalo Antón, Lalo’s father, who, at the age of 37 and with a background in restaurants, decided to create his own winery with the aim of producing modern, perfumed, food-friendly wines that are true to their roots and a natural expression of the area. As well as the winery, the family also run the Michelin-starred restaurant, Zaldiaran, in nearby Vitoria.


No wonder that it went so well with one of our recent At Home dinners, this a delightful and very different fish box from Goldie in Cork. While not perhaps gelling with every single element, the Izadi proved an able companion that evening. A wine for the notebook for sure! Mid ruby colour. Very pleasantly perfumed, with cherries prominent, even a note of sweetness. Scented and balanced all the way, this elegant wine is concentrated on the palate, full of pristine flavours of red and darker berries, a little spice too, along with a natural acidity and a mellow tannin. Refreshing and refined, this gem (on which oak has been judiciously used) finishes elegantly and is one that you’ll savour and remember. Very Highly Recommended. 


Barbera is Piedmont’s most planted red and fitting that the Vajra’s first “task” here was to match with Guancia Di Manzo Topinaburn Al Tarfuto (Slow-cooked Beef Cheek, Barbera D’Asti jus, creamy mash, truffle infused Jerusalem artichokes) from da Mirco’s “At Home” here in Cork. Aside from our Barbera d’Alba, you’ll also hear of its next door neighbours Barbera d’Asti and of Barbera Monferrato (lesser known hereabouts).


GD Vajra have been farming organically since 1971 but they didn’t get off to the best of starts. Giuseppe, during an April online masterclass, said he was dragged away from his soccer games (he was playing too much of it - well he was just 15) to plant his first vineyard. 


He and his current team are still youthful and he is proud of their work. “We hope we get wiser as we go on. We started organically and our first vintage in 1972 was not a good one, not worth ageing!” The whole extended family are at work here in this “multicultural team” near the village of Barolo. Perhaps, that first vintage was a disappointment but there have been many good ones since including this 2018.


Vintage summary: 2018 was marked by an abundant flowering, a gradual ripening and one of the latest harvests of the decade. Precipitations were exceptional during the entire year, as was the dedication of Vajra's vineyard team. Such determined work and a meticulous sorting brought only the healthy grapes to the winery, with delicate perfumes and a juice that was pink already upon crushing. This harvest was particularly favourable for the best exposed vineyards, those at high elevation, and the late ripening varietals. The wines are fragrant, deliciously aromatic, with elegant tannins.

The Ricossa Barolo (2015) is a stellar attraction in SuperValu’s Easter offering which sees dozens of wines on offer until April 14th.


The vintage of 2015 was very good. It followed a difficult 2014 and preceded an outstanding 2016 (watch out for that!). The label tells us that this Barolo is produced with Nebbiolo grapes grown in the eleven municipalities of the DOCG. Its great structure is ennobled by a 3 year maturation of which at least 2 years is in wooden barrels.



It has a mid to dark ruby colour. Aromas, a melange of cherries and red berries, are exquisite. On the palate it is quite hearty and concentrated but with an excellent acidity that helps bring a harmonious quality right through to the lengthy finish. There is a little tannic grip, you notice it, just about, on the lips. Reduced from €24.99 to €20.00.


Serve at 16 - 18 °C. It is very versatile at the table (avoid it with fish though) and you’ll find quite a few suggestions (including your Easter lamb) here.

Barolo is situated in the Italian region of Piedmont in the north-west corner of the country bordering France and Switzerland. The area is sandwiched between the Alps to the north and the Mediterranean to the south, resulting in warm summers and cool winters which result in elegant, beautifully balanced wines with long ageing potential as is well illustrated by this Ricossa.

The Barolo is one of a handful of “Cracking Easter Wines” headlining the current offers until April 14th. If I had to pick just one more, I’d be getting the Lady de Mour (Margaux). This has a deep ruby colour. Red Berries on the nose, touch of vanilla too. Super-smooth blackcurrant,  elegant palate, terrific body and texture, harmony reigns between fruit and smooth tannin, persisting all the way to the impressive finalé. Impressive all round actually. Was €34.99, now €25.00.

Dozens of Wines on Offer!


Just flicking through the dozens of wines on offer Thursday 25th March – Wednesday 14th April 2021, and I spotted two from the highly respected Spanish wine family Torres, two that have on shelves around here for decades: Vina Sol and Sangre de Toro. This couple have stood the test of time and are down to just nine euro each in the offer. They were regulars in this house decades ago and I must get myself a couple for old time’s sake!

How about a few whites? Check out the Martin Codax Albariño (was 17.99, now 15). A lovely light gold is the colour. Aromas are intense - floral, fruity, herbaceous. No shortage of citrus-y fruits on the palate, quite a bracing acidity here and then that long minerally finish.  Ideal for those Atlantic shellfish. Then there’s a Chablis from André Guichot (was 19.99, now 15.00) and the well-known well-loved Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc (was 14.99, now 11.00). Look out also for reliable Chilean producers Cono Sur and Santa Rita.


Wines from Finca Labarca in Rioja feature regularly on the SuperValu shelves. The Pagos AEX is a favourite of customers and also of wine buyer Kevin O’Callaghan. This blockbuster, produced from some exceptional Tempranillo grapes,  is smooth and rounded, concentrated fruit, hints of spice and oak, fine tannins, and a persistent finish. Great with the beef! Reduced from 22.99 to 20.00.


The Barone Montalto Ammasso (was 18.99, now 15.00) is from Sicily and uses partially dried grapes, the method known here as Ammasso. The varieties blended in this gorgeous and complex wine are Nero d’Avola, Nerello Mascalese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon (two local, two international). The result is a rather plush wine and the finish is long. Go for it!


Nugan Estate Alfredo Dried Grape Shiraz (15.99 down to 12.00) is all the way from Australia and it too is made from partially dried grapes which give more flavour, more concentrated aromas. Great with cured meats, big steaks or your favourite pizza.


Remy Ferbras Vacqueyras. Wine of the month.

This Southern Rhone has a ruby red colour;  cherries stand out in the inviting mix of aromas. There is lively fruit and spices plus a hint of liquorice; it is full bodied and rounded. The village itself is small and tree lined. Indeed, when I called there a few years back, the canopy of leaves had the centre in deep shade in the early afternoon. Looked a bit unreal. Shade or no shade, this wine will be a friend to your table.  A friend to your wallet as well as it is now available at €12.00 (normal price 20.99).
