Returning for the first time since pre-Covid, the awards – proudly sponsored by Kerrygold, Irish Farmers Association, Bord Bia, Tourism Ireland and National Dairy Council – will be opened by guest of honour, Simon Coveney T.D., Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, and attended by some 300 guests including business owners, Irish and international chefs, buyers, food and drink writers, media and industry leaders. Anita Mendiratta, Special Advisor to the Secretary General of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation, will deliver the afternoon’s Key Note speech.

Margaret Jeffares, Founder and Managing Director of Good Food Ireland® says: "There is great excitement around the return of The Good Food Ireland® Awards this year to celebrate the successful collaboration of cross-sector businesses working together for inclusive economic growth.

“All of those wonderful businesses who have made the shortlist are a committed collection of passionate and driven people who genuinely capture the essence of Ireland's food and drink, setting it in a cultural context to inspire travellers, international consumers and locals to seek out real authenticity and Irish provenance. All the judges would like to extend our congratulations to them all and wish everyone the best of luck for the 17th April."

Hayfield Manor launches exclusive range of GROUND holistic rituals

Hayfield Manor launches exclusive range of GROUND holistic rituals

Handmade by founder Peigín Crowley in County Cork, GROUND is a collection of face balms and body oils that are 100% natural, giving nourishment while helping us to bring focus, ritual and intention into our mind and body.

“I am beyond proud, partnering with Hayfield Manor is an absolute privilege,” says creative aromatherapist and GROUND founder, Peigín Crowley, “being proudly Cork - Hayfield Manor is simply iconic, we have celebrated many family gatherings at this luxury hotel and treasure it’s warm welcome & charm”.

GROUND Rituals have been designed in collaboration with Rachel O’Malley, Hayfield Manor’s own award-winning therapist. During Lockdown, Peigin & Rachel created rituals together that celebrate the importance of taking space for sacred moments to mind yourself and be minded, to reconnect to source and replenish. Blending mindfulness — being fully present in our body with breathwork, the power of touch, and the potent aromatherapy oils, GROUND Rituals will invite this awareness while encouraging a relaxed and peaceful state, a return to self.

“So fortunate to have worked with the very brilliant Rachel O'Malley - veteran therapist (twice awarded Therapist of the Year by Irish Tatler no less) and Spa Supervisor at Hayfield Manor. COVID gifted us months together, crafting these GROUND Rituals - designing all that we love about the power of touch coupled with self-care woven into purposeful massage rituals” – Peigin Crowley

Hayfield Manor will be the first in Ireland to offer ‘The Balancing Ritual’ especially created to empower & support women through change, offering relief of Perimenopause & Menopause symptoms. “Designed with women in mind, this hands-on approach to wellbeing is truly holistic, using Breathwork, Cold Stone Massage Therapy, Gua Sha, Reflexology and Lymphatic Drainage - this unique and purposeful ritual will bring alignment and balance when going through this change and experiencing the symptoms of menopause at any stage” says Treatment Designer Rachel O’Malley.

Rachel O’Malley

There are six GROUND Rituals at Hayfield Manor —

  • The ‘tóg go bog é’ Full Body Massage (60 mins, €110),
  • The Grounding Ritual for Deep Relaxation (60 mins, €115 or 90 mins, €160),
  • The Restorative Ritual for the Face, Neck & Scalp (60 mins, €120),
  • The Comforting Ritual for Pregnancy (60 mins, €115 or 90 mins, €160)
  • The Cleansing Ritual for Gut Harmony (60 mins €105
  • The Balancing Ritual for Peri-menopause & Menopause (60 mins, €120 or 90 mins, €165),

Each GROUND Ritual includes gentle breathwork, hands-on rhythmical pressures and techniques, including Gua Sha stones, and the compelling powers of aromatherapy oils. All these elements combine to create a mindful moment in time customised for you — a moment to be truly present in your body as you lean into relaxation and peacefulness.

About Skellig Six18 Distillery: Skellig Six18 was inspired by the landscape that is defined by the tenacity, muinín and grit of the 6th century monks who built a monastery at the edge of the world. Off the Wild Atlantic coastline, this ancient monastery can only be reached by climbing six hundred & 18 stone steps that lead to the top of the Skellig Michael. This has been our inspiration and where Skellig Six18 begins.

Skellig Six18 Gin is the prefect aperitif, distilled in small batches at the distillery in Cahersiveen, Co. Kerry. Each local botanical has been carefully chosen, filled with flavour to create a unique Irish Gin, herbaceous with citrus and pink grapefruit notes. Developing a complex liquid, rich in flavour and depth means Skellig Six18 Gin pairs beautifully with a variety of foods. The perfect aperitif.

Dining Under A Gilded Dome At Killarney’s The Great Southern

Dining Under A Gilded Dome At Killarney’s Great Southern
The Garden Room (pic: Great Southern)

No doubt about it. You will look up, more than once, when you dine in the Garden Room, the principal restaurant in Killarney’s Great Southern Hotel. It is indeed a superb room in the old hotel, comfortably furnished and beautifully decorated and that high dome, with all that gold leaf, is eye-catching.

The food, by the way, isn't half-bad either, well presented too and served with a smile. Here you start with some of their breads (no charge) and a flavoursome amuse bouche.
Pork Belly starter

Fancy a wine or a drink from the bar? No problem. Our wine, from the Duoro, was the Ferreirinha Esteva (30.00), a red blend, perfumed and intense, smooth on the palate, long and elegant on the finish, welcome at the table!

Cordal goats cheese is really making its mark in Kerry and in the Garden Room it is served, as a starter, in a lovely mousse with beetroot, saffron pears, candied walnuts, red cabbage purée and focaccia crisp.

Another impressive starter was the Lime and Chilli Crab Tian which consists of Crab Claws, red pepper coulis, and wasabi Mayo while another of the party was well pleased with the Wild Atlantic Seafood Chowder. A sorbet follows.

One of our group goes for the char-grilled sirloin of local Hereford Beef, served with shallot, mushroom, horseradish crème fraiche and Port Jus is your choice. Another picks the Ring of Kerry lamb.

The Carrigcleena Duck Breast may be incorrectly spelled on the menu but the dish itself is top of the class. Pan seared, it is served as a main course with carrot and ginger purée, curly kale, grilled asparagus, and sultan jus.

More top class poultry in the Supreme of Chicken (from Manor Farm), with sun-dried tomatoes and parmesan farce, lentils, pancetta crisp, roasted garlic jus. Four punters well satisfied, so satisfied in fact that nobody orders dessert!
Cordal cheese starter

I must admit I was rather tempted myself, especially by the day’s special: the Steamed Orange pudding - here the specials are conveniently listed on the menu. The Garden Rooms certainly support local and that is underlined by an excellent cheeseboard that includes Gubbeen, Cordal, Knockatee, and Cooleeny.

We were ordering from the Table d’Hote dinner, two courses for €36.50. So time to pay up and take a final look up at that amazing dome and head out through the Grand Foyer complete with grand piano.

“Spectacular architecture melded with effortless service and genuine hospitality has made Great Southern Killarney an iconic retreat for over 160 years.” It has had its ups and downs in those years, but it seems to me that it is now, as part of the Hayfield family, once again on the up. Long may it continue.

Grey outside; gold inside!
