CATCH 'EM YOUNG

Kerpen
CATCH THEM YOUNG
Kerpen 2009 Riesling Blauschiefer Trocken, 12.5%, Karwig Wines (€14.05) ****
On a Christmas visit to Carrigaline I picked up this
little gem at Karwig Wines. Not so much picked up. Not just like that. Had some good advice from Joe himself when I asked for a young Riesling – didn't want anything with “petrol”. Must say my current preference for the young ones was confirmed in no uncertain way by this well made well balanced wine, “a harmony of sweetness and acid”
Colour: Yellowy-green, micro-bubbles clinging to the glass.
Nose: Moderately aromatic (no petrol!)
Palate: Tingly, really pleasant sensations all over the palate, fruity (apples) and with a lingering finish.
La Columbe Chablis 2008 12.5% Curious Wines ***
Nose: Fresh and flinty, hint of melons.
Colour. Bright pale straw, very clean.
Palate: Crisp and lively with citrus fruits and a good length on the finish. Got six months at least on its lees and that certainly helps. This entry level Chablis went very well with pre-meal olives and the main course of smoked salmon.
This is the classic area for Chardonnay and this one is made under the umbrella of Boutinot.
