Down by the River Lee. Early-ish on a Saturday morning

Down by the River Lee.

Saturday morning in Cork City

October 19th, 2024

Had no breakfast that morning and looking at this made me hungrier.
Luckily, the Marina Market was a few steps behind me.

It was still dark (just before 8.00am) on my way south. You can see the moon high above
Patrick's Bridge. Below is the Bus Station at Parnell Place.

On the way back, I enjoyed the breakfast at the Marina Market before walking up the quays.
Here the water and reflections have been slightly disturbed by rowing boats,
always on the river on Saturdays

A Sustainable Weekend in Cork Curated by Jo Linehan

Jo Linehan's guide to Cork

The River Lee, part of the Irish, family-owned luxury hotel group The Doyle Collection, have launched Curated Weekends in Cork, their latest inspired venture that aims to showcase Cork through the eyes of some of the county’s most creative minds.

Jo Linehan, editor of the CLIMATE supplement with The Sunday Times Ireland and the founder of GAFF Interiors, is a long-time friend of The River Lee and the first Cork native to partner with the hotel on their new Curated Weekends in Cork platform. Jo’s new, comprehensive guide, created through the lens of sustainability, features her hit list for an ideal 48 hour stay in Cork, including a travel and shopping guide with some hidden gems - all based around a low impact stay at The River Lee.

Speaking about her inspiration behind the weekend, Jo says, “my passion for sustainability is deeply rooted in my upbringing in Cork. As a walkable city, bountiful with local food producers and suppliers, craftspeople and brimming with wildlife, biodiversity and history, to simply be in Cork is to reconnect with nature and ourselves. I hope my guide will do just that; help you experience some of the city's most special places and a few lesser-known gems that never fail to fill my cup”.

At the Glucksman

Included in this bespoke guide are Nano Nagle Place, The Crawford Art Gallery, fashion store Samui, Vibes & Scribes, a haven for book and stationary lovers and the fantastic Blackrock Castle Observatory.

As part of her guide, Jo has crated a Weekend Curators: Sustainable Cork 2-night offer. This offer includes a very special early access tour of Nano Nagle Place, the historic city location that details the life of education trailblazer, Nano Nagle. An expert guide will lead you through the award-winning museum housed in Georgian convent buildings, the extensive beautiful walled gardens, the mid-nineteenth-century Goldie Chapel and the early twenty-first-century primary school, all spread over 3.5 acres.

The Rooftop Farm

Also included are tickets to Blackrock Castle Observatory, an award-winning science centre and active research observatory, where they aim to have a positive impact on the attitudes towards science, engineering and technology in Ireland. The tickets include access to the Ireland in Space exhibition, a Castle Tour, and a Star Show as well as a donation to Dark Skies Ireland, who raise awareness on the impact of light pollution in Ireland and promote the use of responsible lighting.

Jo Linehan’s Weekend Curators: Sustainable Cork guide with The River Lee is the perfect way to enjoy a low-impact weekend while taking in all that Cork city has to offer. Enjoy a two-night stay with breakfast each morning, three-course dinner on one evening in The Grill Room, an early access private tour of Nano Nagle Place and tickets to Blackrock Castle Observatory which includes a donation to Dark Skies Ireland from €737. Welcome to Sanctuary at The River Club

— a pause from the hectic pace of modern life

at The River Lee

The terrace at The River Club has been transformed into a floral oasis of tranquillity just in time for the warmer months. Continuing in its series of thought provoking and visually stunning transformations, Sanctuary at The River Club is the creative and calming new installation on the riverside terrace at The River Lee, in partnership with Cork’s seminal florist and long-time collaborator with the hotel team, Fox Flowers.

Inspired by city parks, planned gardens and Georgian Squares and allied to the acknowledged wellness benefits of plants and herbs - to say nothing of the visual respite these spaces provide to city dwellers - this tranquil terrace is a place to engage with nature while enjoying an evening tipple or a weekend brunch with friends.

Clusters of blue-lilac wisteria cascade throughout, accompanied by rambling ivy, vines and perfumed rosemary, jasmine and lavender that bring a fragrant welcome to every corner. These vibrant scented blooms are dotted through slate walls and curved wrought iron, bringing the essence of our favourite green city spaces to the terrace, all overlooking the rolling river below.

Designed as an antidote to the hectic pace of modern city living, be it a space for pause to engage with nature, or a moment of mindfulness, this bountiful terrace will provide calm and inspiration with its contrast of structure meeting nature. The juxtaposition of abundance and verdant planting against the geometric forms of the arches and ironwork on the terrace is a kind of controlled wildness, underlining the idea of the importance of balance, and that both form and freedom are essential to a feeling of comfort and sanctuary.

The team at The River Club have created five new cocktails exclusive to Sanctuary at The River Club, celebrating the calming powers of this handful of particularly potent plants. Jasmine combines its floral tones with pineapple and Havana Club 3-Year-Old Rum to create a divine digestion-aiding tipple, Chamomile incorporates its fragrant and calming flavours with rose, lemon and Belevedere Blackberry & Lemongrass Vodka, and the antioxidant-rich Hibiscus packs a punch with pink grapefruit, orange and Bombay Citron Pressé Gin. Bergamont is a low-alcohol option that enlivens the senses with mint, lemon and Italicus and Elderflower is a refreshing non-alcholic cocktail with anti-inflammatory perks.

Sanctuary at The River Club has teamed up with ‘Green Spaces for Health, Cork’ who work through government lobbying and outreach programmes to preserve, protect and create green spaces throughout Cork city and county.

With cocktails priced between €10 and €14, €1 from each cocktail will go to the Green Spaces for Health Togher Community Garden project.

Sanctuary at The River Club launches on 14th April and is open seven days a week from midday until late. Bookings can be made on theriverclubcork.ie or at 021 493 7772. Or why not make a weekend of it? Overnight stays at The River Lee start from €220.

The River Club – Cork’s ultimate destination to eat, drink and be social.
