A totally unexpected gift from a travelling salesman started Jane Murphy’s long term love of goats and led to the beautiful Ardsallagh cheese that so many people know and love today.

Back in the late 70s, that insurance salesman in County Carlow wasn’t getting the best of receptions from Jane. During the conversation, he noticed, “couldn't help but notice”, that her children had eczema and said that goats milk would be a help. Jane said thanks very much for the tip and sent him on his way.

An hour or so later, she sighed as he returned. This time with a gift. He lifted a goat out of the boot, presented her to Jane and carried on his way. She never saw that salesman again but the goat led to greater things.

For a start, the eczema cleared up and "since then we have always had goats in the garden and following years of experimenting this has grown into something wonderfully and tasty." Ardsallagh has now been making cheese for over 20 years.

Ardsallagh cheese keeps popping up on restaurant menus and not just in Cork. It is one of the most popular and one of the very best goats cheeses in the country. It is widely stocked in shops and supermarkets, various farmers markets and in delis such as On the Pig's Back. I got this particular piece via On the Pig's Back on Neighbourfood.

Ardsallagh soft goats cheese is a white cheese with a creamy texture. This cheese has a gentle flavour as it is made daily from fresh goats milk. It is delicious and very handy these warm days as a lunchtime treat. I just added some beetroot from the garden (not a great crop this year), a few juicy cherry tomatoes, also via Neighbourfood, and a few leaves of basil.

St Tola Goats Greek Style Cheese


To give it its full title our Taste of the Week is St Tola Gold with Newgrange Chili and Garlic Rapeseed oil. They also add peppers and dried thyme. This delicious new product is, like all their cheeses, produced from the pasteurised milk of their renowned herd of goats looked after on their Inagh farm in County Clare.

I spotted it on the extensive cheese offering from On The Pig's Back as detailed on the Neighbourfood site and got it in last week's delivery. So what would I do with it? Just thought of checking their website and they had a few answers: Great as a pizza topping, in salad or just straight from the jar!

As it turned out, pizza was on the menu. We made up the dough from the regular Gozney recipe and the first addition was the outstanding pizza sauce from the West Cork Food Company. Some Kalamata olives and semi sun-dried tomatoes were then added before the chunks of the St Tola were generously scattered around.


A few minutes later, we were tucking into a couple of superb pizzas, our Taste of the Week playing a starring role. We haven't made that many yet on the Gozney but, as novices, we were extremely happy with this one, with its combination of outstanding flavours, and the recipe will be repeated!

As it happened, there was still some left in theSt Tol jar and that went down well with a salad on the following day.

A Local Salad, Boy



The sun may not be as constant as we would like, but these are certainly salad days. And it so easy to put a good one together, just like this very local combination, our Taste of the Week.

The main player here is perhaps the Ardsallagh Goats Cheese, a renowned East Cork product that is readily available. Also in there is a terrific Spiced Apple and Carrot Chutney from On The Pig's Back. And those tasty little red salad onions come from Kilbrack Farm in North Cork. The leaves and radishes from the back garden!

As you know, I'm a big fan of Neighbourfood and virtually everything (cheese, onions, chutney, tomatoes) above came through my delivery so that made it even easier for me!

Couscous has become very well-known here over the past few decades. You can use it as an accompaniment to meat dishes. Tagine is a regular example.Or you may enjoy it as a standalone salad.

Either way, you'll find it hard to top the fresh and spicy Couscous salad with carrots, peppers, raisins and almonds, and Moroccan spices that On The Pig's Back produce. It is our current Taste of the Week.

We ordered it (€5.50) via Neighbourfood and paired it with those very tasty Skeaghanore duck confit legs (widely available, including via Neighbourfood). A superb result!

The Izz Cafe's bowl of three jumbo sized Medjool dates, stuffed with almonds and coated with chocolate and coconut or pistachio, is our Taste of the Week. 
Medjool dates are widely acknowledged as the best of dates. Here, enhanced by the additions of the Izz Cafe, they are even better.
I got mine via NeighbourFood where the café has a large selection of it sweet and savoury offerings available. Well worth checking out!

How many hands does it take to make a lively tasty salad at the start of spring. Quite a few as it turned out last weekend. But it turned out very well indeed. Quite a Taste of the Week!

The leaves, a lovely mix, came from Purple Squirrel Farm. There was Sweet Pickled Onion from ORSO, adding a delicious kick. From Olives West Cork came Freshly Marinated Koroneiki Olives (big plump and superb) and Semi Sundried Tomatoes (big juicy Sicilians that had to be cut down to size with a scissors). 



The main star of the dish was Jack McCarthy's Pastrami (left), all the way from Kanturk, and supplied to Neighbourfood via On the Pig's Back. Indeed all the ingredients came via Neighbourfood, illustrating once again how this organisation is helping small producers and at the same time giving customers the chance to taste the very best around.

Raspberry Cheesecake. 

Lots of excellent Heat at Home, Click & Collect, and Takeaway Meals around the city and county at the moment. But there are some that fail to excite when you read the menu. “Same old, same old”. You think and move on to another virtual menu.

The menu at On the Pig’s Back, changes weekly and is well worth taking a look at. Prawns, Chicken Salad, Hake and Pork Chop, may not at first seem all that exciting but go a little deeper, as Head Chef Paul did, and you’ll see those prawns come with the most gorgeous Creamed Corn, not an everyday menu item around here! The Hake is enhanced by a beautiful Corn Succotash, another item I rarely, if ever, see on local menus.

We had the privilege of trying the full menu last Saturday night and both quality and quantity were massive. You do have to do your own bit in the kitchen of course but the instructions are clear and precise and easy to follow.

BBQ Prawns with Creamed Corn and Kale. Takes about six minutes to prepare at home.
 Amazing flavour here, all blended in so well, and that corn was outstanding.



Spiced Chicken Salad with Crisp Leaves, Cherry tomato, Red Onion, Ranch Dressing and Croutons 
Another 6 minutes required here! Nice and spicy and that dressing really enhanced it, would have been a different dish without it.


Herb Crusted Pan-fried Hake, Corn Succotash, Baked Sweet Potato Wedges and Caper Brown Butter.
This takes about twice as long as the starters. Delicious crust on the hake and that Succotash was really superb, contributing much to the dish.

Broiled Marinated Pork Chop, Buttered Savoy Cabbage, Fondant Potatoes with Mild Mustard Sauce.
Again, about twice as long as the starters but you do have to start the potatoes earlier! Another winner and that includes the potatoes! The chop was itself was top class, juicy, succulent.



Mississippi Mud Pie, garnished with crushed meringue and served cold.






Baked Raspberry Cheesecake, served cold. Extra berries not included! So much fruit flavour came through here. Really indulgent!

Not surprised at all at the quality as we’ve been buying quite a few bits and pieces from On the Pig’s Back via Neighbourfood over the past 12 months or so and whether it’s their quiches, soups, tagines, Harissa chicken fillet, Beef Bourguignon, or Fish Pie Gratin, we’ve never been disappointed. And so when I got the invite to try out the Saturday Night Takeway, the rapid response was “yes, please”.

The quality of the produce available from On The Pig's Back - Cheese, Meat, Deli, Pantry, Wine - is consistently good. Always worth a gamble, though in truth, it is never a risk. This is underlined with their Spiced Apple and Carrot Chutney, our current Taste of the Week.

We got it in one of our Neighbourfood orders and soon found it does what it says on the tin, and so much more.  Over a couple of lunches we paired it with local cheeses and it enhanced them each time. Shouldn't be surprised really as everything that we've tasted from their kitchen, has always been premier class. So there you are, another one for your shopping list.

Creamy!!!


The best Panna Cotta ever. An exquisite Pâté. And a classic Beef Bourguignon. 


Three courses, sourced from three local food heroes, composed a very satisfactory evening meal last weekend. Chapeau to Farmgate Café, On the Pig’s Back and Annie’s Roast (and to Neighbourfood who have all three on their list). 


We may be restricted in our movements but thanks to being able to order online and to deliveries by Neighbourfood, and the work of the Blog Chef, we can still enjoy our meals. I’m sure many of you have found your own satisfactory solutions.


One thing about ordering online is that you can end up sometimes with too little, sometimes too much. We had been thinking about ordering Saturday’s evening meal in (via Click & Collect or similar) but then took stock of what was already in the house and came up with this very tasty alternative indeed.



Think I’ll start at the end with that amazing Panna Cotta from Annie’s Roast. Annie is probably best known to most of us for her market stall that features mainly ducks and chickens (which come from East Ferry Farm owned by her brother Rob and his wife Yvonne). By the way, she’s now taking orders, including goose and turkey, for Christmas



But she also does a variety of prepared foods and this rich and luxurious dessert is one of them. One to watch out for! This classic Italian sweet is made with delicate vanilla bottom and a fresh strawberry topping, using all local-licious produce including: buttermilk, cream, sugar, strawberries (€5.50). 


The starter, from the English Market’s Farmgate was also pretty rich, smooth and superb. Chef Pam Kelly and her team have come up with a very satisfying combination of Carrignavar Duck Livers and Longueville House Apple Brandy. And you get quite a tub of it for just over a fiver.



We’ve got in quite a few prepared snacks and meals from On the Pig’s Back via Neighbourfood. The Beef Bourguignon (€7.95) comes freshly frozen and has a shelf life of 3 months. But it was dispatched here after three days.


It is the traditional French stew prepared with beef braised in red wine and beef broth, flavoured with garlic, onions, carrots, and mushrooms. Serves 1-2. Suggested side (not included): Creamy mashed potato. It takes about 20 minutes to reheat - you get instructions!



We did add the mashed potato as suggested and this was yet another winner. Just top class quality beef, hearty and warming, a genuine traditional taste of the heart of France made right here in the heart of the city with the best of Irish ingredients. Superb. But then, the kitchen in On the Pig’s Back seldom (if ever) disappoints.

Supporting local will be the aim again this weekend. Looking forward to trying the incredibly popular Dim Sum from O'Mahony's Watergrasshill. We missed on their first two offerings of it as it sold out very quickly. Third time lucky though!

Lots of Irish cheese enjoyed these past few months, thanks to the delivery service of Neighbourfood. On the Pig's Back are regular suppliers and most, if not all these cheeses, have come from the Douglas outfit. I could do a Taste of the Week with each but took this shortcut instead! Just gives an idea of the marvellous cheese we have in this country. And there are so many more!

No problem finding a taste of the week when the order from Neighbourfood arrives. The only trouble is picking one for The Taste of the Week.

This week the nod goes to On the Pig’s Back for their Harissa Chicken Fillet. Many of you will know that Harissa is a hot sauce or paste used in North African cuisine, made from chilli peppers, paprika, and olive oil.

The chicken is top quality and the version of the sauce in which it was cooked was fairly hot. We enjoyed it for lunch with a salad (leaves and radish from the garden) and some left-over potato. The salad helped cool the sauce and we there and then decided to order our new Taste of the Week again. And again!

On The Pig’s Back 

Must say that On The Pig's Back is one of the stars of my NeighbourFood box.We've told you recently about their stunning quiches and they have an endless selection of top cheese (Hegarty's and Durrus now in the fridge). A day or two after the chicken (above), we enjoyed their superb Fish Pie Grattan. You might well query: what's the big deal about a fish pie? This is something special. The main ingredients (smoked haddock, cod, and salmon) are more or less the usual. They add in carrot, leek, celery, fennel, garlic, potato, white wine, cream, herbs, breadcrumbs, cheese, olive oil, butter and cornflour. Throw in their experience and attention to detail and you a beauty on your hands, on your plate, as good as many a restaurant meal! It comes frozen and will keep for three months or so. No waiting around here!
