Following the postponement of the 2020 festival due to the pandemic, organisers have endeavoured to create an event with health and safety in mind, that will still allow for meaningful connections and engagement.

Over three days, enjoy architecture, food and design through a series of architectural pavilions, events, talks, exhibitions and conversations.

Design POP 2021 will be focusing on topics of learning, collaborations, and conversation around important social, sustainable and environmental topics. This celebratory festival enriches and engages with attendees by bringing together leading Irish designers, architects, and food makers to collaborate in forums, share creative experiences and create connections. Save the date: 27 - 29th August 2021.

Festival Director Amy McKeogh says: “

The Design POP team and I are all really looking forward to the festival this year and excited to show the public what we have been working on for the past few months. We have 7 amazing Architect, Designer and Food collaborations working on 7 different pavilions which will be situated in different locations around Cork. The Architects and Designers are currently developing and finalising their pavilion designs, while collaborating with the food producers, who are working on the public interactive element of the structure. It is a fantastic process to watch, with each of the different pairings coming up with different and exciting ideas and concepts.

Along with the pavilions we are excited to share the line-up of over 25 guest speakers, 7 pavilions and different events happening around the city over the weekend.

The Design POP programme will be announced  mid-June, with tickets going on sale at the same time. www.designpop.ie

Design POP is made possible with generous support from Cork City Council and LEO Cork City.

DESIGN POP FESTIVAL 2020 CANCELLED

STATEMENT FROM DESIGN POP FESTIVAL 2020
PLANNED FOR 28-30 AUGUST

After much deliberation, following the recent government restrictions around COVID19, it is with a heavy heart that Cork’s Design and Food Festival, Design POP, has made the decision to cancel this year’s eventwhich was scheduled to take place next week from August 28th to August 30th.

The 3-day event, which had carefully planned social distancing guidelines in place based on the previous government guidelines, would have injected creativity and colour across the city, with 3 pop-up pavilions supporting Designers and local food producers, an Irish Design Shop, exhibition, a furniture-designer showcase, and discussions from special guests MASER, WhyDesign Founder Kim Mackenzie-Doyle, plus over 16 free talks and workshops.

Festival Director Amy McKeogh commented:
“Design POP is about creativity, interaction, and brings joy to the public realm and under the current government restrictions, we would not be able to do so. With the confusion, and conflicting information from the Government, and the fact that the festival HQ, Thompson House, is not deemed to be a gallery, theatre, or cinema, we have come to the really difficult decision to cancel the event.

The outdoor pavilions are about fun, engagement and design, and with the number of people reduced to 15 people, I feel it becomes more about restrictions and less about the intentions of the festival.

I would like to extend a huge thank you to all designers, food producers, sponsors, speakers and makers who have already invested so much of their time and energy in the making of this event over the past few months. All ticket holders will be refunded their money in the coming days.
The Design POP team is already making plans and gearing up to make our 2021 festival bigger and better. We thank everyone for all the support over the past year. Take care and stay safe.”

Speaking about re-launching the 2020 edition, Festival Director Amy McKeogh, a Qualified Architect with a Master’s Degree from University College Cork, says: "I am really delighted that Design POP will happen this year. After months of careful deliberations, it was really important that we found a way to make it happen, even in our strange new reality amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The intention of Design POP has always been to celebrate the incredible talent in Architecture, Design, and Food/Drink producers in Ireland. It is more important than ever to celebrate creativity, collaboration, and the power of Local. This year's theme for the festival is Resilience, this theme will be explored through the pavilions, talks, and conversations, happening over the weekend.

This year's festival intends to bring Creativity, fun, and connection into Cork City, but from a safe distance."

For the amended 2020 edition, Design POP will bring together three top Irish design teams to create three pop-up installation structures, which will go on display in various outdoor locations across Cork city. DESIGN POP RESCHEDULED TO 28-30 AUGUST 2020

Due to increasing restrictions around the Covid-19 crisis, Cork’s trendy design and food festival, Design Pop, originally due to happen in May, has made the decision to postpone their event until 28-30th August 2020.

Design Pop brings together six top Irish designers to create six pop-up installation structures which will go on display in various locations across the city over three days. Each designer is paired with a Cork-based food or drink producer to create a bespoke space which the public are invited to explore and interact with. The 2019 edition saw designers Shane O’Driscoll, Alan Macilwraith, Fíor studios, Meitheal Architects, Conor Merriman, and Alex Pentex team up with food specialists Banana Melon, Good Day Deli, All Full up, My Goodness, Soma and Applebee cakes.

As well as this exciting new design and food trail across the city, the festival also hosts a jam-packed programme of exhibitions, talks, and workshops, which will take place both within the designed structures and in more unusual spaces around Cork allowing artists, creatives, food stylists, producers, designers, and makers, to discuss and showcase their work processes.

Creative Director of the Festival, Amy McKeogh, commented:

“In light of all that is happening with COVID-19, the Design Pop team has come to the decision to postpone the festival until 28th - 30th of August 2020. This is to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone participating in and attending the festival.

Developments for the festival have paused and not stopped, I feel very lucky that we are in a position where we can reschedule our festival to a later date. The silver lining is that we have more time to make DP 2020 as fantastic as possible.”
