Tokyo takes the crown as world fine dining capital

Alpha Travel Insurance has analysed the number of Michelin stars and fine dining restaurants in the world’s major cities to find out which destination has the most Michelin stars and name the fine dining capital of the world.

  • Tokyo takes first place as the city with the highest number of Michelin stars with 229 stars and 1,758 fine dining restaurants
  • Europe is the continent with the most stars with 415 Michelin starred restaurants with Paris, London, Madrid, Barcelona and Rome in the top five cities in Europe
  • Paris has the highest number of Michelin stars per square mile with almost 3 restaurants per square mile

26th November 2018: Findings released today from Alpha Travel Insurance reveal the top cities for fine dining around the world and restaurants with the most Michelin stars. If you enjoy the finer things in life or are a foodie who wants to set their taste buds alight when travelling to new places, then it’s likely that you want to sample the local delicacies of the world when you’re abroad or enjoy an exquisite meal in the city you’re visiting. Tokyo was revealed to be the number one major city in the world for Michelin stars and fine dining with a total of 229 Michelin stars and 1,758 fine dining restaurants. With traditional Japanese dishes including sushi, tempura and sashimi, if you visit Japan’s capital city there’s no doubt you’ll find these homeland dishes in one of Tokyo’s many gourmet restaurants.

Paris, the second largest city in Europe, came in second place overall with a total of 113 Michelin stars and 756 fine dining restaurants. In fact, Europe is the continent with the most Michelin stars according to the major cities included in Alpha Travel Insurances foodies guide - with 415 Michelin stars in total. Paris, London, Madrid, Barcelona and Rome are the top five cities with the most stars in Europe.

London may come in fourth place overall for the total number of Michelin stars with a total of 73 stars - behind Osaka with 99 stars -  but it comes third for fine dining restaurants with a total of 709 to be found in the UK’s capital city. New York has 529 fine dining restaurants and also features in the top five for Michelin stars with 71 stars in the city, while Hong Kong has 473 fine dining restaurants and doesn’t feature in the top five for Michelin stars.

Alpha Travel Insurance also calculated the number of Michelin stars per square mile in each city, with Paris coming out on top with 3 stars per square mile in the city, followed by Geneva in second place and Osaka in third.
