Munster Wine & Dine. Coming Soon. An evening at Killahora Orchards

Dear MWDC Members and Friends

After our very enjoyable Wine Geese Tasting Trail in March, we're delighted to bring you details of our second event for 2018, which will take place on Tuesday 24th April, when we will take to the lovely rural setting of Glounthane for a visit to Killahora Orchards.

Killahora Orchards is a family business founded on an estate dating back to 1750. The family’s goal is to use the uniqueness of Ireland's soil and climate to grow select Rare Apple varieties, and to use accomplished Artisanal techniques to turn that unique combination of fruit into Award winning Craft Ciders, Wines and Aperitifs.

Using methods that span 3 centuries and 3 countries, the family has created an award winning Rare Apple Bittersweet Cider, a uniquely Irish Apple Port, (Pom’O), and the first Ice Wine created from bittersweet apples. For more on Killahora check out this CorkBilly post here

Event: An evening in the orchard setting of Killahora Orchards in Glounthaune and tasting of Johnny Fall Down Cider and more...

Dear MWDC Members and Friends

We'd like to thank everyone who joined us earlier this month for the 2018 Programme launch in L'Atitude and to Toby Simmonds from the Real Olive Company for his presentation and tasting of a myriad of Real Olive Company's olives and wonderful locally-made cheeses. If you missed the event, Billy Lyons has captured it all for you to read here: http://www.corkbilly.com/2018/02/olives-beyond-tuscany-buffalo-return-to.html

Thanks to everyone who has renewed their membership for 2018 and to new members for joining us this year. There's a fantastic year of events in store - we look forward to sharing more details with you as dates and events are confirmed.

Note: We are still waiting to hear from some existing members to confirm if they wish to renew their membership for 2018. If you wish to renew, but haven't had a chance to do so yet, can you send a mail to MWDCircle@gmail.com so that we can update our members list for 2018. Cheques can be sent with completed application forms to MWDC C/O L'Atitude 51, 1 Union Quay or by bank transfer to IBAN IE81AIBK93638372852066 (BIC: AIBKIE2D) Please reference your name and “2018 Sub” if choosing this method of payment. Renewal deadline is Friday March 9th 2018.

We're delighted to bring you full details of our first official event for the year:
Wine Geese Tasting Trail Saturday March 24th 2pm led by Colm McCan and Beverley Mathews.
Starting at 2pm in St Peter's Church on North Main Street, we will retrace the footsteps of Cork's Wine Geese Families taking inspiration from Ted Murphy wine historian and author of "A Kingdom of Wine". Our tour will take in the streets, buildings and places connected with Cork's famous wine families. Cork Bonded Warehouses will open especially for us on the day so we can see the vaults where all wine and spirits shipped into Cork were stored for centuries until the bond moved its operations to Tivoli last year. This may well be the last time we get to see the Bonded Warehouses in their current guise as plans are underway to redevelop the Port of Cork and its historic buildings. The tour will be punctuated with tasting stops along the way for a taste of some modern-day Irish-influenced wines. The tour and tastings will take approximately 3 hours and costs €15 for members. This is a fascinating tour which is always a popular feature of the annual Culture Night Programme and sells out every year. If you'd like to join us, please RSVP by Friday 16th March.

Finally, as mentioned in our last email, we think all members should have a voice so that the programme reflects what the members want, so if you'd like to have your say, complete the quick survey here https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HPJWRBJ to let us know what you'd like to see more of in the programme.

We look forward to seeing you at our first event of 2018 on March 24th

All the best

Full report on the 2018 Launch here

Munster Wine & Dine. Coming Soon. The 2018 Launch!

Dear MWDC Members & Friends

2017 was another great year for the Munster Wine & Dine Circle with lots of interesting and varied events from tea tastings to beer, gin and wine tastings to farm visits and long lazy lunches. You can read all about each event courtesy of Billy Lyons here at
http://www.corkbilly.com/search?q=munster+wine
and also
http://www.corkbilly.com/p/munster-wine-dine-launch.html

We are looking forward to another year of tastings, dinners, tours, and lots more...

We are delighted to announce that the 2018 launch will take place on Thursday 8th February at 6pm in L'Atitude 51 on Union Quay with a drinks and canapé reception and a talk and tasting with Toby Simmonds of the Real Olive Company, one of Cork's finest suppliers of Mediterranean products and locally-made Italian style cheeses.

The Real Olive Company began life in 1993 in Cork’s English Market, when Toby, at the age of twenty, took a small stall at the Princes Street end of the market. The stall began with just ten varieties of olives and a few other Mediterranean foods. The Real Olive Company has since gone from strength to strength. In 1994, they launched their first van onto the street markets of Ireland, bringing olives to the rest of the country. In 2009, Toby set up Toons Bridge Dairy with his wife Jenny-Rose Clarke making southern Mediterranean-style cheeses with raw cow and sheep milk. And they have exciting plans for the future, which Toby will share with us on the evening.

The launch will kick off at 6.00pm with a prosecco reception where we’ll welcome new members and everyone will have the opportunity to mingle, followed by a brief presentation and tasting of Real Olive Company Products, after which we will outline the programme for the year with you.

Admission to the launch is free (new and existing members), but capacity is limited, so please RSVP to this address before Friday 2nd February if you'd like to attend.

Existing Members - please note that membership subscriptions for 2018 are now up for renewal. At the last committee meeting, it was agreed not to increase membership subs this year. Therefore, single membership is still €30 and joint membership €50. Please find membership renewal form for 2018 attached. Cheques can be made payable to the MWDC or payment can also be made by bank transfer to the following account. IBAN IE81AIBK93638372852066 (BIC: AIBKIE2D) Please reference your name and “2018 Sub” if choosing this method of payment. Renewals are due by 8th February 2018.

New Members - we are currently accepting applications from new members. If possible, potential new members should be proposed by existing members and new members should send their application before the launch date on 8th February.

However, please note that membership numbers will be capped at 80 for 2018 to ensure that members get the chance to attend as many events as possible. Existing members will be given priority to renew their membership before new members are confirmed.

We think all members should have a voice so that the programme reflects what the members want, so we will shortly send a link to a very quick survey to ask what you’d like to see more of in 2018. The survey takes 1 minute to complete, so we would really appreciate your feedback.

If you'd like to attend the programme launch, please RSVP to mwdcircle@gmail.com by Friday 2nd February.

For members unable to attend, applications for membership renewal can be posted to the MWDC C/O L'Atitude 51, 1 Union Quay, Cork.

We look forward to seeing you on February 8th in L’Atitude 51!

All the best
